How to Prevent Urinary Tract Infections: Essential Tips for Men & Women
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections affecting both men and women, although women are at a higher risk due to their shorter urethra. A UTI occurs when bacteria enter the urinary system, leading to infection in the bladder, urethra, ureters, or kidneys. While most UTIs can be treated with antibiotics, prevention is always the best approach to maintain a healthy urinary system.
One of the most effective ways to prevent UTIs is by staying well-hydrated. Drinking plenty of water helps flush bacteria out of the urinary tract before they can cause an infection. Maintaining proper personal hygiene, urinating after sexual activity, and avoiding prolonged holding of urine also significantly reduce the risk of bacterial growth.
Women should always wipe from front to back after using the restroom to prevent bacteria from spreading to the urinary tract. Wearing breathable cotton underwear, avoiding harsh soaps or scented feminine hygiene products, and maintaining good intimate hygiene can also help prevent infections. Men should maintain proper genital hygiene and seek medical advice if they experience frequent urinary symptoms or have an enlarged prostate.
